Geoffrey Hill
In memory of Jane Fraser
When snow like sheep lay in the fold
And wind went
begging at each door,
And the far
hills were blue with cold,
And a cloud
shroud lay on the moor,
She kept the
siege. And every day
We watched
her brooding over death
Like a strong
bird above its prey.
The room
filled with the kettle’s breath.
Damp curtains
glued against the pane
Sealed time
away. Her body froze
As if to
freeze us all, and chain
Creation to a
stunned repose.
She died
before the world could stir.
In March the
ice unloosed the brook
And water
ruffled the sun’s hair.
Dead cones
upon the alder shook.
Geoffrey Hill
In memoria di Jane Fraser
Quando la neve pareva
gregge agli stazzi,
e il vento elemosinava
porta a porta,
e le colline lassù erano
paonazze di freddo,
e un sudario di nubi
copriva la brughiera,
lei sostenne l’assedio.
E la vedemmo
giorno su giorno
rimuginare sulla morte
come un forte uccello
sopra la sua preda.
Il fiato della teiera
riempiva la stanza.
Umide tende appiccicate al
vetro
tenevano fuori il tempo.
Il suo corpo gelava
come a gelare noi tutti, e
incatenare
il Creato a una stordita
quiete.
Morì prima che il mondo
si destasse.
In marzo il ghiaccio
liberò il ruscello
e l’acqua arruffò i
capelli del sole.
Pigne morte tremolavano
sull’ontano.
